Abstract

This study examines the lived experiences of long-married couples in Southern Cebu, Philippines those who have been together for more than thirty years. It focuses on the elements that help sustain enduring relationships. Drawing on Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love and the Socio-Ecological Model, the study employs a qualitative, transcendental phenomenological approach to illuminate the emotional, relational, and contextual aspects that are often overlooked in existing literature. Through in-depth interviews with ten thriving couples, the study found that family milestones such as anniversaries or children’s achievements tend to strengthen emotional closeness. At the same time, challenges such as financial struggles, family conflicts, and experiences of loss have helped couples develop resilience and a sense of shared growth. The study found that lasting marriages grow from simple yet steady practices talking openly, showing respect, holding on to shared beliefs, and keeping faith at the center of the relationship. As the years pass, couples who learn to read each other’s emotions and work toward the same goals often grow even closer. The stories gathered in Roots and Rings: Tales of Decades Love offer lessons that counselors, family groups, and young couples may find helpful as they build their own lasting unions.
